Non-attachment in Sequencing
Instructors are often asked to create classes that support their clients. We sit and try to innovate and look at what the theme is, who might come to class. We design classes to meet people where they are at. Welcome to the December 2025 blog for Total 360 yoga. This blog will discuss non-attachment as it applies to sequencing.
In sequencing, we are looking for a warm-up, meditation aspects, a peak pose, and a way to come back down to allow the class to end. This is your basic structure. This is not an absolute. Sequencing is designed to allow instructors to have a plan for their classes. We want to offer a clean, functional space that supports our clients.
As we move through creating a class, we are looking for logical transitions, meeting the peak pose, and building on ideas. We often subconsciously put our preferences into the class. We are attached to things we like. The idea of looking at the overall product at the end will help to see if we are being objective in our design. We might have the perfect design for a class, we have some stimulating poses and opportunities to seek harmony. We walk in the door, and we have four beginners in the class that day. This is the moment where you have to be able to detach from what you designed and feed the room. This needs to be done at any point. The idea of being non-attached in sequencing helps the instructor flow. At first, instructors might struggle with this. They may not have enough tools or experience to be able to move effortlessly to something else.
When I teach classes, I have the framework of my class, I know the sequences I want to do, but if I feel a sensation in what we are doing, and we want to continue it, it is not uncommon for me to transition to continue with the flow. The classes are not about the instructors. While instructors may have a moment of bliss, it’s about the students and clients who have to be supported. Design classes with a non-attached, non-judgmental method and watch as your ability to adapt grows.
