Feeling the energy shift

Feeling the energy shift.

Yoga is about energy, feel, and sensation.  Often in classes, you get a different sensation from the poses we move through.  The Sensations may be subtle, and sometimes they encompass us.  This blog will discuss recognizing, feeling, and embracing those changes.

Most yoga classes start with meditation, which is usually the beginning of understanding the sensation.  We focus on slowing down our breathing and bringing our attention to what we are doing.  Meditation is an opportunity to do a body scan and see what needs attention.

As we move into our poses, the body shifts from sitting still to into the movement.  The movement allows the muscles to move and settle. Once in the pose, the sensation begins.  Depending on the pose, you may feel it in your hips, arms, and shoulders.  As you transition to the new pose, take a moment to think about what muscles are used, and how it feels.  Are you radiating forward, are there distractions?

As you settle into the pose, you notice a rise of warmth moving through the body.  Warmth is usually related to thermal dynamics and the heat of changing poses.  The longer you stay in the pose, the more the body settles in.  Yoga classes like restorative and yin yoga allow you to truly feel these poses as the body can completely relax in the pose.

Where did your emotion go during the transition and settling of the pose?  In my vinyasa flow classes, there is often a discussion of PIES.  While it certainly would make a yoga class longer if you thought about how you feel physically, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually with each pose.  Take a moment and ask yourself one of those questions in each pose.  Bringing your attention to the small factors can help eliminate discussions, reframe the mind, and help you achieve balance.

As you pull through the pose, you often hear cues to transition to the next pose.  Allow yourself to follow and re-evaluate.  While our mind wants to wander, if we maintain our focus, we will discover a new chapter, and a deepening of our practice if we concentrate on the energy shift.  Bring yourself into each moment.  Total 360 has a mantra for 2025 that follows this conversation.  Peace be still, and stillness be peace.

Become an integral part of the process of your journey.  Build yourself and feel the PIES, the movement, and the energy.  We look forward to seeing everyone on the next journey. Namaste.
