Discipline

Discipline is something that has been wavering in society lately.  If you look at the military, discipline is taught from basic training and translates into the battlefield.  Training causes discipline to be there when there is chaos.  The idea is the same in Total360 Karate.  While it may not be basic training, there are rules and expectations.  Some expectations include not talking when Sensei or Semapi are teaching, and standing still while on the line.  Focus your attention on where the activity is.

When you look at attention tasks, do you ever wonder why they are not issues for some students?  They have found a way to remain focused through noise. If you don't listen, you can not address the issue, or understand what is being said.  If you can not remain still, you might get cut while being shaved or bit by an animal.  Focusing your attention is simple especially when a punch or kick is coming at you.

Students in Total360 above the rank of green belt have the knowledge of what is expected with discipline. Advanced students have been in the studio for 1-2 years.  Most parents relate they see a change in focus and respect as they move into the green belt rank.

Look at first responders and their discipline when they arrive in a car accident, fire, or other situation they can operate. Advanced karate students battled their discipline and the same mentality.  First responders are trained to be calm, use their training, and stay focused on the task.  Being focused and disciplined are skills taught in Total 360 karate and can be used for life.  Building the foundations of discipline requires acknowledging mistakes, building good habits (28 days) to change the behavior, and challenging yourself daily.

How is discipline going to help me with karate?  Remove the life application of karate; how does karate discipline help you in the dojo?  Most students do sparring as a method to apply their skills.  Total 360 adds sparring, by making you tired, then sparring.  Being disciplined helps students revert to basics.  Discipline will help you when you get hit, control the anger that might rise, and respond appropriately.  Discipline is usually different in the upper ranks. The more advanced the rank, the more discipline, consistency, and self-motivation is required.

The last part of this blog will discuss the importance of consistency in your discipline.  You have to practice it to be successful at it.  Ninety minutes a week will not be enough to change your behavior in 28 days.  You have to be willing to apply the practices in the dojo to your daily life.
