Indeed, the reason we start something is not necessarily the reason we finish something. Somewhere along the line, we find a purpose or a determination to accomplish the goal. Some people or intrinsically motivated to be successful. Others have to be motivated. Whatever the case is, how you get determination is not as important as having it.
Determination is the will, controlling, or deciding nature or outcome of something.
Determination is something which can transcend boundaries, obstacles, and your own will. It is a mental belief in something greater than one thinks is possible. It is digging deep when you're trying to defend yourself and finding the inner warrior spirit. It is knowing you’ve been knocked down, but you refuse to stay on the ground. It’s understanding that everything is against you but still refuses to give up.
Determination is built over time. Through a series of events, you learn to form your mind into something that looks like determination. It is through self-talk and self-belief that you can do this. Understand time will try and sway you away from being determined. People will tell you it can’t be done.
Determination can be built through self-talk, isolation in thought, erasing negative ideas, and reinforcing your thoughts with positive re-affirmations. In karate, we start this process in Mokuso by trying to teach students to clear their minds of all the other things they have to do after practice and live in the moment. Determination thrives at the moment. Once you are in the moment, you should start the process of self-talk. I can do this. I am fast enough, strong enough, I know this, and so on.
Very rarely do you see a black belt from a Japanese style of karate that is not determined? It has been ingrained in them to never give up. With all of the negatives in the world, Karate students need to block out the noise and realize how powerful they can become if they learn determination.
